Diesel exhaust fluid, or DEF, is a clear, colorless, non-hazardous liquid used to remove harmful emissions from diesel engines. DEF is composed of a combined solution of urea and water. It’s typically stored in a separate tank on the vehicle and requires refills depending on usage.
How does it work?
In 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) required new emissions standards on medium and heavy-duty vehicles to reduce engine emissions – specifically NOx (nitrogen oxides) and particulate matter. DEF helps break down NOx gases down into harmless water and gas using an advanced catalyst system.
What is the benefit of DEF fluid?
DEF can help optimize engine performance, improve fuel efficiency, reduce maintenance or wear and tear on the engine, and reliability. It can even improve fuel mileage by as much as 5%. It’s an essential component for many diesel vehicles.
Where can I get it?
Because most diesel engines must use commercial DEF fluid, you can find it in select stores in jugs and commercial pumps. The only downside is DEF isn’t offered everywhere.
